Anything You Can Do I Can Do Bettter
When i was coming up with potential paradigm shift ideas, there was one specific topic that immediately came to my attention. Many people who have watched the news recently have heard about the two female Army officers who just graduated from the very prestigious Ranger school.A third female has just recently graduated as of last week. Women's roles in the military has changed.Gone are the days of lessons filled with specific beauty and gender guidelines. With the increase of threats overseas and the ever-ending presence of troops in areas such as Afghanistan, there's been a push for equal treatment towards women in the armed forces and a change in opinions of females in the military.
In my essay I will be focusing on the specific changes of women in the armed forces in different decades starting with WWII. I will be taking a look at the different physical standards that have occurred throughout the decades such as; their physical appearance while in uniform and pt standards.I'll also be taking a look at the expanding roles of the female forces from the main administrative and nursing roles in the early 1940's and 50's to the opening of combat roles in present day.
While this is a lot of information to cover, I would also like to take a look at certain counterarguments and opinions of women in the military held by the population and individuals during the differing decades.
Women have really been in the forefront of conflict in recent years and have always played influential roles in the armed forces yet, their hard work is extremely overlooked in many cases.I will be shining a light on the impact that these women have had throughout our countries history.

This is a very interesting topic and the significance is clear. The time period you are dealing with is concise. I am just wondering if you are focusing on the actual change of women's roles in the military, or if you are focusing on how society's views and support of women in the armed forces has changed.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Celeste, it's unclear if you want to focus on women's changing roles or changing societal views towards women in the military. Or maybe...You want to focus on changing women's roles in the military brought about by changing societal attitudes? That would be fascinating
ReplyDeleteThis is definitely a very interesting topic. However, like Celeste and Rebecca said above you will probably have to narrow it down just because there is so much information on this topic!
ReplyDeleteRenee, I'll simply echo the thoughts of the students above with my comment: Namely, as you're honing your ideas, be sure you're not tackling too much. (I know you were concerned whether you'd have "enough" for 7-10 pages, but like I mentioned during class, you actually might have more than you could tackle.)
ReplyDeleteThis being said, I think Celeste and Rebecca draw useful distinctions: one is the changing roles themselves, and the other is the public's perceptions of those changing roles. The first angle, I presume, would be easier to trace and support. (The second might be interesting, but you'd need to find ample data and research on public perception about women in the military, which does deviate from your initial topic of the actual roles of women in the military and how those have changed.)
I hope this is helpful!
